Summary: When your baby is teething, all you want to do is help them feel better. Unfortunately, many times it can be difficult and upsetting when they are so upset and nothing seems to be working for you. Here are some things that soothe babies teething.
There are so many things that are so easy to do when you have a baby. Making them laugh and playing with them are the simple and fun things we all love doing and come so naturally. Many times we think that making our baby feel better will happen as naturally and when it does not it can be heartbreaking and frustrating.
One of the most common times that your baby needs soothing and comfort is when they are teething. They can be so uncomfortable and in pain and it can feel like there is little you can do for them. There are some items that you can get to help get you started.
1. Teethers that can be frozen for them to suck on and these will numb their gums a little and lessen some of the pain.
2. Teething toys that are made specifically for teething, so they are usually a softer rubber that a baby can chew on and rub their gums on.
3. Teething gel to help numb their gums. This is similar to adult tooth gels, but will specifically be made for babies that are teething.
4. Baby aspirin which will help them sleep at night and again lessen the amount of pain that they are in.
After you have purchased a few of these items or maybe even all of them. As a parent there are some things that you can do while using these items to make your baby feel better.
- Of course rocking can work, however try wrapping them tightly again, similar to how they were as a newborn infant. Now rock them slowly, but keep the same rhythm and keep them very close to you. Possibly if it is comfortable, have their head by your heart, this is a soothing noise, since it is something they heard for nine months.
- Rubbing their gums with your own finger. Holding them and rubbing their gums gives them security, but also will lessen some of the pain they are in.
- Using their swings or rocker. Again, the repetitive motion will help lull them and make them feel secure. As strange as this may sound, placing them near a running dishwasher can also be soothing.
- Bouncing and walking may be tiring for us as parents, but it is a great way to calm a crying baby. Gently bouncing or rocking them while walking helps again to sooth with the repetitive motion and has a lulling affect.
- Along with any of these, making a shushing sound lets them hear your voice, but is not as distracting. It is also similar to what they have heard while in the womb.
Combining techniques to make your little one feel better will be hard at times, but over time it will become easier. Incorporating different techniques and changing them as need be will also make calming them down easier and faster. As your baby gets older they will learn ways to make themselves feel better, however until then, soothing them can be done with a little patience and know how.
