Now that your baby is teething you have probably noticed that everything in your house has been chewed and drooled on. Anything that your little one finds and can get their hands on, becomes their property to make their very sore mouth feel just a little better. However, while they are doing all this chewing, your furniture now has small teeth marks in it and scratches. Along with their crib and probably some of their toys.
As much as you may want them to feel better, having ruined furniture is not something you want to look at from now on. There are some ways to protect your furniture and their crib, while still allowing them to chew and ease their pain.
Begin by making sure that everything is picked up and no longer at arms reach for them. This probably sounds like an obvious task to do and something you already have begun doing. However, it is amazing what they can get their hands and what they are able to reach.
Even items that may not seem like something they would want to chew, they will if they can find it or reach it. So, just start moving all those items that used to be closer to the ground up much higher. This will save some of your more precious keepsakes and memorabilia and stop your little one from getting into items that could also hurt them. You may feel a little like your living with everything above your waste, however you will be glad you did.
Next, buying teethers and teething toys will make your baby much happier. Their are cold teethers that can be frozen that will sooth their aching gums and teething toys that are made of rubber, but slightly hard. These will work much better than furniture and odds and ends that they find.
Also, having teething gels and maybe even aspirin on hand will not hurt either. Especially for those days when nothing else is working. Teething gels will help to numb their gums, you just put a little on your finger and rub it along their gum line. Aspirin is good too as a last resort for when gels and toys are no longer working and this also will help them sleep better at night. If you do decide to use aspirin, just make sure to read the instructions carefully and if possible check with your pediatrician.
Lastly, covering your furniture and their crib the best you can, will eliminate the majority of problems. There are rubber bumpers sold to cover corners of tables and desks. These are made so they do not bump their heads while learning to crawl and walk, however, they work great to stop your baby from leaving teeth marks in your furniture.
They will probably like chewing on it still, but it will be safer for them also. Then there are also crib covers that can be purchased to cover the railings of their cribs and bars. These are usually made of material and very soft. Again, they can still gnaw and chew without leaving any marks.
Trying some of these will help you eliminate damage and possible injury to your child while they are teething. They do need to ease their pain with chewing, but it does not mean.
