The length of time that morning sickness persists, varies from woman to woman. Some only feel bad for a week or two while others appear to suffer for many weeks, often for as long as four or five months.
Do you have any idea what causes morning sickness? You may be surprised to realize that morning sickness is actually a good sign. The increasing production of the hormones necessary for the growth of a healthy placenta is what causes morning sickness. So while you may feel miserable for several weeks, you can take comfort in the fact that your baby is getting what she needs.
There are some steps to take that can lessen the effects of morning sickness on your daily routine.
Keep soda crackers by your bed and eat a few about fifteen minutes before you get up.
Drink small amounts of fluids throughout the day.
Eat frequent small meals instead of three big ones.
Avoid foods and smells that increase the nausea and vomiting.
If cooking smells trigger nausea, see if you can get your husband or someone else to cook. Open windows and turn on fans to help lessen the odors.
Get plenty of rest and take one or two naps a day if possible.
Avoid places that are very warm as this can add to the nausea.
Sniff lemons and ginger and/or drink lemonade and ginger ale. Also eat watermelon.
Salty potato chips seem to quell nausea.
Get some exercise.
Avoid spicy and greasy foods.
Don’t lie down right after a meal, it slows digestion and increases your chances of developing nausea and vomiting.
Do not take any over the counter medications to combat nausea and vomiting unless your doctor specifically prescribes it, as the medicine could be harmful to your baby.
Be aware that there is a condition that appears to be a more severe form of morning sickness but is much more serious. Hyperemesis Gravada is a condition cause by nausea and frequent excessive vomiting which can cause weight loss and electrolyte imbalance, which if untreated could kill you and your baby. Hospitalization for monitoring and intra-venous therapy to restore the proper electrolyte balance may be necessary.
Contact your doctor or health care professional if you can’t keep food down, have pain and frequent vomiting and abnormal weight loss. Hyper emesis is eminently treatable if caught in time.
Don’t worry about bothering the doctor or health professional, better to err on the side of caution than to allow a serious condition to go untreated. Your doctor would much prefer that you contact him than to wind up having to come see you at the hospital emergency room in the middle of the night.
