Some Bed Wetting Tips

Summary: One problem parents can have a tough time dealing with is bed wetting. It’s not discussed very often, if at all. The medical name for bedwetting at night is nocturnal enuresis. It is not as uncommon as one might think.

Bedwetting on rare occasions is not a big problem. It can often be attributed to illness or the child may sleep extra soundly and not waken in time to get to the bathroom.  You can assure your child that there is nothing to worry about.

It is when the bed wetting seems to be extremely frequent that there may be something to be concerned about. You might consider consulting your child’s pediatrician. They will likely do a head to toe physical and run some tests to be sure there is no signs of disease. Once that’s ruled out, you will likely be advised on things you might try at home to see if it helps to alleviate or eliminate bed wetting.

Liquids should be eliminated no later than two hours before bed time. It is believed that this might help your child to not wet the bed. Avoid sodas, coffee, and tea as these foods can actually make your child’s body produce more urine than normal.

Have your child go to the bathroom before going to bed and if possible wake them up and take them to the bathroom. Both of those things may help your child to stay dry throughout the night.

Try to reassure your child that it is not their fault and neither is it yours. It might simply be that your child’s bladder is smaller than normal or that it is just immature-it hasn’t caught up with the  growth of the body.

If the bed wetting is particularly severe, you might consider alarms that are designed to wake your child up at the first sign of  wetness.  You can get information about them online and from your doctor.

Mattress covers made of vinyl or plastic will prevent moisture from getting into the mattress.
Disposable pads placed on top of the bottom sheet and another folded sheet will also work to protect bedding as can rubber sheeting.  Of course the disposable  padding can be used even if you have a covered mattress.

It is important you that involve your child in getting their bedding washed, into the dryer, and folded or back on the bed. Encouragement when they stay dry is important as well.
