Summary: When you first get your infant car seat, it is usually already assembled and the straps are normally in the lowest position for your very small baby.  However, sometimes you will need to readjust these to make sure that they are in the proper position for your baby's safety.  This is actually pretty easy to do.

  1. Check to see where the straps are when you first take the car seat out of the box.  The shoulder harnesses should be in the lowest position.  There will be three slots on the car seat, with the car seat pad over them with slots also.  The straps should be in the bottom slot.
  2. Now look where the strap comes up between your baby's legs.  This is where the should straps lock into and there will be two slots here.  This strap should be in the top slot, closest to the shoulder harnesses.
  3. If these are correct then you are ready to install your car seat into the car using the manual that came with the car seat.  Follow the instructions on how to install the car seat correctly.  They always need to be install rear facing in the back seat.  However, if the harness and strap are not correct follow the instructions below.
  4. Turn your car seat over so you are now looking at the back of the car seat.  You will see the straps that are coming through the slots from the front and are now attached in the back.
  5. There will be a bracket to unhook from the back for the harnesses.  Unhook one, slide it out from the back to the front.
  6. Now slide it back through the slot that is the lowest opening.  Go through the pad and back through the back of the seat.  do this on both of the harness straps.  Do not hook bracket back onto the car seat yet.
  7. Now check the length.  If they need to be shortened, the strap that fits through the bracket can be adjusted as well.  Shortened the straps as necessary, there should be room for two fingers between your baby and the straps.
  8. Now that you have adjusted and possibly shortened the harnesses, you will need to adjust the crotch strap as well.
  9. Turn the car seat so you can see the very bottom.  This strap is easier to adjust.  Just slide the buckle through the slot from the front and out the back.
  10. Now move it to the slot that will be closest to your baby and slide it back through the back through to the front.
  11. Place your baby in the car seat and make sure that the straps are fitting properly.  Adjust them as needed, it may take one or two tries to get it right.
  12. If the harness is still too large, even after these adjustments, you can always purchase pads that fit around the straps.
  13. Place the pad into the car seat.  There will be velcro openings on the harness pads, undo these and wrap around the straps and re-velcro.
  14. There will be an opening for the crotch strap and velcro openings to go around the crotch straps as well.  Undo these and wrap around and re-velcro.

Your all done!  As your baby grows you will be able to remove the car seat pad that was purchased.  You will also need to re-adjust the harness straps and crotch strap as needed.
