Scrapbooking with your Child

Why scrapbooking with your child?

Children grow so fast that it seems like it was only a few months ago we were bringing them home from the hospital.  Now he or she is in kindergarten or in preschool and has an interest in keeping the little treasures they have made for you at school, or on those rainy days at home.  Now is when you want to introduce them to scrap booking, they will have a place to put their pictures and you can add photos and little notes as your child grows and as the things they put in the book change with age.  It is a nice thing to have once they are grown and on their own so you can show their children what he or she did when they were young.

The two of you can save small things for the book in a box and put them in it on a rainy day when they’re isn’t much else to do.  It is a good time to socialize with your child and show them a craft that they can use the rest of their lives if they wish…  You can also take their big art and using a copier, shrink it down so it fits the pages better.  Then you have a copy and the original to put away for another project.   Boys or girls will scrap book, it is a messy, fun project that both enjoy with a parent!

Selecting a Car Seat

It’s hard to believe there was ever a time that kids didn’t ride in car seats and yet it wasn’t that long ago that the whole concept was unheard of. Babies used to come home from the hospital in their mother’s arms, and kids bounced around the back seat without a care in the world. It is a wonder how any of them survived to adulthood!

So, today, parents have a myriad of choices when it comes to car seats for their kids. One brand is much like any other. So, instead of doing comparisons, let us look at the features you will want to consider when buying a car seat.

Newborns

First, there are the seats for newborns. In fact, many hospitals now require you to have a car seat before you can take your baby home. With newborns, they are so small and so flaccid (their muscles having yet to strengthen and tone), you might want to consider getting a car seat that reclines down into a car bed. Also, whether seat or bed, newborns are unable to hold their heads up. There are foam / cloth “collars” you can buy (usually at the same place you get the car seat) that will fit around your newborn’s head and keep it from flopping from side to side. Another key point with newborns is to use a rear-facing car seat. It is safer for them, supports their tiny bodies, and there is less chance of their head flopping forward if the car comes to a sudden stop. Read more

Hazards to Children in the Home

In the average family home there are many precautions we all need to take when our children are small.  They are curious and want to be into everything and taste, feel and experience it, especially once they are mobile and crawling.  Then everything is a target to be mauled, chewed, and pulled apart.

Almost Mobile

Before your baby can get around, you need to make your home as hazard free as you can.  Get down and lie on the floor and really look from a baby’s eye view.  It will amaze you all the things you will see that you didn’t before.   The electrical plugs, a marble that rolled under the desk and you did not see it; little toys that belong to the three year old your sister has that were forgotten under the furniture.  You didn’t see these things before but rest assured your newly mobile explorer will find them and they will have them in their mouth and could possibly choke on them.  Look out for the electrical cords that could be pulled and lamps brought over or for the empty sockets just waiting to zap little fingers.
