Enuresis is the medical term for not being able to control your bladder. You may be sleeping so deeply that you don’t feel the need to pee and you can wet the bed.
Enuresis that occurs at night is nocturnal enuresis. Enuresis that occurs at night is called diurnal enuresis.
There are two types of enuresis. Primary enuresis is indicated when an
individual has been bed wetting since they were very young. Secondary
enuresis occurs from 6 month to years after learning how to control
their bladder.
The bladder is a muscular holding container that holds pee. It expands
as it is filled with urine. It shrinks to get rid of the urine.
Typically the nerves in the bladder will send a message to the brain
that the bladder needs to be emptied. The brain sends a signal to the
bladder so that the bladder won’t automatically empty itself.
Night time enuresis is that a problem that can make somebody unable to
control the bladder. What causes enuresis is not really known but there
are thoughts on what may be contributing factors in nocturnal enuresis.
Hormones may affect nocturnal enuresis. ADH is a hormone that causes
the bladder to make less urine at night. Some people have bodies that
make too much urine at night.
Some people may have too many muscle spasms. This may cause the bladder
to not hold a normal amount of urine. Others may have small bladders
that cannot hold large amounts of urine.
Genetics may play a role in nocturnal enuresis. Teen-agers that has
this condition will usually have a parent that had enuresis and it
starts at about the same age. Specific genes have found by scientists
that cause nocturnal enuresis.
Alarms are available that will help to control enuresis. Type of
alarms are wearable alarms that someone can wear that detects wetness
and produces a signal that alerts the wearer to go to the bathroom.
Bell and pad alarms work by putting a pad under the sufferer of
enuresis and bells go off if it detects any wetness. Wireless alarms
are available. The pad is and the alarm can be placed on dresser or
night table.
Talk to the doctor and see what s/he might recommend. There are
accessories for alarms such a pad cover, batteries, and special
mattress pad that will help protect the bed. One important factor is
which one will be best suited to the family and its cost.
