Woven Basket Bassinet

Summary: Your newborn baby may be more comfortable in a woven basket bassinet/Moses basket than he would in a crib.  The basket bassinet is a small space and it may remind him of the cozy womb he was suddenly evicted from.  The bassinet or basket takes up less space and is easy for you to move from room to room.

The Moses basket has handles for carrying, however the manufacturers recommend that you not carry the baby in the basket.  Also you should not transport the baby in the basket, especially not the car.  It isn’t safe.  Use an approved seat in the car and save the basket for the house.

We would suggest that if possible buy a bassinet or basket that is made of organically grown materials and that have not been treated with chemicals to make them shiny or as a base for paint.  You might want to consider a bassinet made by the well known Amish craftsmen.  They are made from 100% organic materials grown in the United States.

Here are some things you should consider when purchasing a bassinet, particularly:

  • Is the base sturdy and wide?
  • Every so often check that the screws and or bolts art tight.
  • If it is a folding base/stand make sure the legs lock so that the bassinet won’t collapse.
  • The basket or bassinet has a mattress that fits snugly.
  • If your bassinet has a hood, make sure it folds back so that it is easier for you to get the baby in and out of her bed.
  • When you are ready to buy bedding consider buying organic cotton bedding for your baby’s safety and comfort.
  • Make sure none of the reeds on your basket or bassinet are broken or rough.  You child could get hurt.
A well made and cared for bassinet or basket is something that will last long after you child has moved to a crib.  In fact your grandchildren may sleep in it.

You may wonder what you can do with your bassinet or basket when baby  outgrows it.  Here are a few ideas for old baby beds: use them to hold the baby’s stuffed animals or dolls, keep extra bedding in them, drape it with an old quilt and keep it in the guest room especially if it is an antique.

A Moses basket could be used in the bathroom to hold towels, etc., a really attractive eco friendly addition to the décor or in the den to store magazines.  Whatever use you make of the old bassinet, take care of it for future generations.

Your newborn will only use the basket or bassinet for three or four months but there is nothing so touching as sleeping infant in a basket or bassinet.  You can purchase a rocking stand for your Moses basket, it allows you to have the chance to rock your baby to sleep.

If you are looking for a bassinet with wheels, make sure the wheels lock so that your toddler or pet can’t roll it into the wall.  You also will want to avoid using a pillow in the baby’s bed.  She could smother on it.  Your child’s safety is paramount when you look for a woven basket bassinet.
