Couples showers are quite a bit like a “normal” baby shower. The focus still tends to be on the mom. To counter that, , when writing the invitations instead of saying June and John are expecting a baby write:
John and June Doe
Are joyfully awaiting
The birth
Of their son

If one of the few males in your department and his wife or partner are expecting a baby it is perfectly normal to have a shower for him. I would suggest that you invite his wife but the focus should be on your co-worker.
There is no law or rule that says baby shower invitations have to be cute and done in pastel colors. Either search the web for “hip” baby invitations or create your own. You can buy blank invitations for a few dollars and there are numerous web sites where you can download interesting clip art and or shower invitation designs and wording.
Whether your shower will be for the mom, both parents or guys only, you should look for some modern, hip invitations. I saw one homemade invitation that had a picture of a computer on the front. The wording went like this:
Kevin and Maureen
Are about to download
A new baby girl

Another that a friend made for her sister-in-law showed a stove with an open oven door. She added a pan with two balls of dough on it:

My niece was living in one state, her parents in another. In fact all of her close friends and family members were scattered across seven different states. A cousin that lived in the same state as Cathy and Larry decided to host an on line baby shower.
Sara sent out an e-mail invitation that had a clip art image of a baby cradle and this text:
You are invited to attend
A virtual baby shower
For Cathy and Larry
Please join us on
Day, date and time
For an A.O.L. chat
Everyone sent their wrapped gifts to Sara who had arranged to visit Cathy on the day and time that had been chosen.
As Cathy opened each present, Sara typed a message describing the gift and telling who sent it. We all chatted and Sara also took pictures and posted them at an online photo storage site where everyone could see them. We chatted and laughed for well over an hour.
We know other people who have had online baby showers and it seems that this kind of shower is becoming “hip”.
It is still nice to get together physically to chat and see the happiness of the expectant parents. However if that isn’t possible a virtual shower is, I think, a great idea.
When a friend was expecting triplets, her husband, a graphic artist, created a drawing of three babies in a tub. Her sister took that drawing and used it for their “hip” invitation.

If you can’t find the really hip invitation that you are looking for, try to come up with a unique idea of your own and ask for help if you can’t think of a way to bring your idea to life.
Check out stationary stores for hip baby shower invitations that will suit your needs. You need to decide if you want humorous, invitations or “hip” elegant invitations, couples, men/dads only or want to stay with the traditional invitation themes. Only you can decide what is appropriately hip with the folks you will be inviting to the shower.
What your friends may think is really hip and modern, the aunts and other older relatives of the expectant parents may find “inappropriate”. They can’t grasp the concept of men attending baby showers.
If you can’t find hip shower invitations that you like in the stores go on line and type “hip baby shower invitations” into your search engine. You have heard the expression “everything old is new again” and invitations with art deco images are becoming common as well as the really hip psychedelic art of the 1960’s with big bright colors and designs. If either of these strike a cord with you, feel free to use whatever design you like the best and suit’s the taste of the parents. Remember that the invitations you choose set the tone and mood of the parents.
Do a web search for the earliest (oldest) invitation designs available. It would be an interesting baby shower if you used one of these old themes for a modern day shower.
You can have a lot of fun searching for shower invitations that can be considered as hip baby shower invitations like this one:
He is happy, he is glad
Peter Collins
Is gonna
Be a dad
