Cake Recipes for Baby Shower

A really special cake is an important part of any baby shower.  My favorite recipes to use are: Betty Crocker and Pillsbury.  There are a lot of websites that have easy cake recipes that you are free to use at no charge.  However we can’t print them here since they are copywriter, well the ingredient list isn’t but the directions are.  You can find some easy delicious cake recipes at www.allrecipes.com.

You can also do a web search for “easy white cake recipe” or “easy chocolate cake recipe” or whatever kind of recipe you might be interested in.

As I said I am not much of a baker, I use cake mixes all the time. Depending on the occasion I may add a few drops of flavoring like mint or almond to pre-made icing.

If you know the sex of the baby and have a theme like Winnie the Pooh, yellow duck, western theme, Disney Princesses, etc., you can do a more specific recipe search.  If you know that there are twins you could use a “two peas in a pod” theme and cake.  Your choices for a cake are almost endless.

Here are directions for a butterfly cake.  You will need a muffin tin preferably with rounded bottoms, and a heart shaped cake pan, two will be easier.  You will need three boxes of cake mix, they can all be the same flavor or if you’d like each can be different.  Licorice whips for the antenna would be a nice touch.  Icing in dark chocolate and a couple of other colors will be needed.

Bake your cakes as directed on the package and let them cool completely.  You will also need a cake board.  However you can buy a project board and cut off the two sides and you will have a cake board.

When the cakes are baked and cooled, cover the board with aluminum foil.  Put a dab of icing on the bottom of each of the muffins to help keep the muffin on the board.  Line the muffins up in a straight line and frost them with the dark chocolate icing..

Cut the tips of the heart shaped cakes and put a dab of icing on the cut end of the hearts and push them gently against the butterfly body on each side at about the third muffin, leaving three of the muffins extending from the front.  Cut two pieces of the licorice and push them into the top of the first muffin and coil each at the end.

Now have fun decorating the butterfly in bright vivid colors or soft muted ones.  That is entirely up to you.  You might want to use pink or blue depending on the sex of the baby.  Or you could use the colors chosen by the parents to decorate the baby’s room.  You might want to use the same colors as you chose for the shower theme.

Maybe you would like to make a stork cake.  Again you will need three boxes of cake mixes and a cake board covered in foil or clear plastic wrap.  You will also need two loaf pans (4 in. x 6 in.), one 6 in. round pan and one 9 in. round pan and one large wiggle eye from the craft store.

After you have poured into each pan bake them and let them cool completely.  If your oven isn’t big enough to bake all four cakes at once, bake two and freeze them and then do the same with the others.

When you are ready to decorate the cakes, cut one loaf cake in half for the legs.  Cut the other loaf on the diagonal and put them aside.  Take the larger round cake and put it in the middle of the board for the body.  Use one of the triangles and put the widest edge against the round cake.  This is the neck of the stork.  Cut of the tip that is not touching the body.

Put the other round cake against that cut edge.  You now have the head attached.  Now place the widest part of the second triangle against the head for the beak.  Then add the legs.  White is traditional for a stork and the beak and legs are orange, but you can use whatever colors you like.

Draw a line on the beak and draw a wing.  You could use coconut to resemble feathers.  Place the eye on the head.  Add a whimsical touch by placing a small baby doll in a cloth napkin and use a push pin to hold it to the beak.  Now your stork cake is done.

You can also do it the easy way and choose a Wilton cake pan shaped like a baby, a buggy or bassinet to name just a few.

My friend made a few loaf cakes, cut them in squares and decorated them like baby alphabet blocks.  Everyone thought they were so cute.  You have many possibilities open to you and you can use one of your own favorite cake recipes for baby shower
