Baby furniture sets can be bought on a budget

In 20 years, your child won’t remember if you bought the baby furniture set at a high end retail store or if it was a hand me down from another relative. Yet these items retails for hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. Don’t suffer from sticker shock and consider these ways to get your baby furniture set for less. A set often includes a crib, a dresser and a changing table.

The crib portion of your baby furniture is a vital part unless you plan on co-sleeping until your child is 2 or 3 years old. When buying a crib, consider buying a used crib. Before purchasing this crib used, check the Consumer Products Safety Commission for any recalls. Don’t buy a crib that is more than 20 years old, since safety standards have become stricter since the 1970s. Also, older cribs may have been painted with lead paint. Consider buying a crib that can convert into a toddler bed to get more years use out of the crib.

The dresser is important as well in the baby furniture. If you buy it separate from the crib, you can paint or refinish the dresser and crib to match each other. While you may be tempted to pay for a changing table in addition to the dresser, this isn’t necessary. A changing pad that can be added to a dresser top will serve the same function as a changing table. An expensive piece of furniture, the changing table will only last for the first few months of your baby’s life.
