Child Car Seat

Child Car Seat – When On The Move Safety is First

In 1921 the first child car seat was invented. Child car seats have come a long way since then. The first car seat for children was basically a sack with a drawstring that attached to the back seat. Next came a baby car seat which hooked over the back of the car’s front seat.

Since there weren’t even seat belts to hold it in place, that car seat essentially served as a child catapult in the even of a high speed accident.

Luckily the safety and security of children’s car seats have improved exponentially since those days. Now not only are car seats safer, they are the law. In 1978 Tennessee became the first state to put car seat laws on the books. There are a number of important things to remember both before and after purchasing a car seat. These include but certainly aren‘t limited to:

  • The child’s weight should match the manufacturer’s recommendations for the particular model being used.
  • No more then one finger should fit between the harness straps and the child’s collar bone.
  • Do not use a seat that been involved in even a car accident, as an accident sometimes compromises safety features.
  • If there’s a chest clip it should be at armpit level.
  • Children should ride in the back seat only.
  • The seat belt should be tight enough so that the car seat doesn’t wiggle at all.<
  • The price of a car seat depends upon things such as brand name, added amenities, the store at which it was purchased, whether the seat is for an infant or toddler, is convertible, or is a booster seat for an older child, etc. They can cost over $200.00, or under $30.00. Prices, of course, usually fall near the middle.
